Moments Carved in Paper #1: The Librarian Made Us Do It!
. . . $65 / $165
Book no. 1 of our series entitled Moments Carved in Paper is the story of how Lead Graffiti came to be by falling in love with the process, creativity & history of printing slowly & patiently via letterpress.
While the aha! moment was actually a true moment in time, it is a series of interconnected stories acting as stepping stones that got Lead Graffiti to where we are today. From initiating a Visual Communications study abroad to London and a New York field trip to a typographer, to a teacher at the Royal College of Art and the librarian at London’s St. Bride Printing Library who picked the one book to show our group that could have had the impact. Yep, the story was as simple as that.
The Moments Carved in Paper books are a series of autobiographical books, hand bound and printed via letterpress. They are available through Lead Graffiti’s online store in both a softcover and clamshell versions. The series is bound in a flutter book format with a wrap-around jacket. The cover for Book no. 1 is printed on St. Armand Colors Caribou 250 gsm stock with the text pages printed on Somerset Textured White 300 gsm in an edition of 115 (1-3 hors de commerce, 4-15 as clamshells, and 16-115 as standard editions).
We are currently working on the clamshell boxes for each of our "Moments" books. This one will contain the millenium issuee of Life Magazine which listed the Gutenberg Bible as the #1 moment of the past 1000 years, a copy of the Monotype Record and an article about Gill Sans, a typeface included in the book, an original postcard that was the absolute first piece Jill and I printed, and a copy of the book "Snippets" that we produed at Raven Press at the University of Delaware, which was used as a keepsake at a talk given by Matthew Carter as the opening lecture sponsored by Raven Press.
Those were seriously good days when we had seriously big ideas. Actually, thinking about that, things haven't changed a lot over the past 15 years.
