The attendees of this Valentine's Day workshop are a group of professional designers. To celebrate we've designed this workshop experience around the production of an accordion-fold book (zigzag folding) where the book's spreads will juxtapose a handset short paragraph or quote with a Victorian V. We collected ten nice Vs that we wanted to add to our collection after the workshop and made them into copperplates (see below).
NOTE: If you are attending the workshop, here is what we would like you to do. You should have gotten an email from Ray Nichols about our needs. Choose one of the Vs you see here, REPLY TO ALL with the number you have chosen. Then see if you can find a quote from somewhere (story, movie, poetry, etc) that is less than 100 characters and bring that quote with you. We will have some you can choose from if necessary.
The workshop will focus on our Vandercook Universal III which has a printing area of 18" x 24 giving us enough area to allow each of the 16 pages of the book to be 4.5" x 6". The book will be printed as a broadside, meaning it is printed on only one side of a sheet of paper. The sheet is folded into fourths in both directions. Careful tearing along the folds will give you a sheet that when folded correctly will produce an accordion-fold book. We will be hand setting the text which will be inked using the Universal III's inking rollers. The Victorian Vs will be handrolled to achieve a two-color piece.
Each person is being asked to choose a V and then find a quote or short statement (hold it to no more than 150 characters) which will marry in some way to the V. We'll bring plenty of our own quotes so there can be plenty to choose from on that day. If you would reply to the email that went out you can pick any one of the letterforms above. First-come, first-served.
Below is a production view of the lockup for a similar book we did to celebrate the "Day of the Book" with the Center for Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware.
You can see the large letterforms which spelled out "&BOOKS". We are looking forward to a good time.
