In one of the iconic Tour crashes ever. One of the media cars was trying to get in front and veered into the road too far and bumped Antonio Flecha, who bumped into Johnny Hoogerland, who went over his handlebars and directly into a barbed wire fence which was about 12 feet off the road. The TV must have shown it 20 times. Hoogerland got almost 40 stitches. Amazingly he both finished the stage and the 2011 Tour and will forever hold the place of one of the most amazing moments in our Tour watching. A relatively unknown French rider, Tommy Voeckler, won the stage and took over the Yellow Jersey. No one expected him to hold onto it, but he did for the next 10 stages.
